Rename Pier for Seymour, Local Sailing Hero

____________

Saturday December 9, 2000

Dear Editor:
We need to rename the Frederiksted [Ann Abramson] Pier. We cannot have a shadow of shame on our island any longer.

When people arrive, they ask, "Who is Ann Abramson?" It is a question that is hard to answer diplomatically, given her recent conviction on federal charges.

I propose to name the pier "A Toast to the Captian: Teddy Seymour Pier," after the first African-American to circumnavigate the globe on his sailboat, Love Song.

He did this solo and departed from Frederiksted and returned there a couple of years later triumphant.

We have to change the name of the pier in order not to honor convicted criminals.

Ted Seymour is a positive inspiration to our youth and needs to be recognized internationally for his achievement.
